The film, Bread and Angels, brings up the bread revolt that Morocco went through in June, 1981 and its victims; however, it does not claim to be historically exhaustive. Some aspects of its story will be narrated by characters who are still, as of today, in charge of the files of the the victims of this revolt as well as the new and strange cemetery dedicated to them; its tale will be narrated by the film. The purpose of my film is to evoke a nowhere, a non-place, an absence of place that the cemetery is as it exists today, and more broadly, to question the places said to be of “memory” in Moroccan society. My film refers to the real world, real characters, the cemetery, Casablanca, to a time in Moroccan contemporary history, and the approach to filming this reality publicizes and builds a personal point of view about it. How to acknowledge this cemetery while it remains closed, and invisible thanks to the blinds surrounding it?
